Trekking between History and Bubbles: The Montagnola Trenches and the Ponteggio Vineyards

There are pathways that don't just make you walk, but take you back in time.’Montagnola Itinerary, just a few minutes from Valdobbiadene, is one of these. It's a “complete” walk: you go from the Piave riverbed to the ridges occupied by the Austro-Hungarian army during the Great War, all immersed in the UNESCO landscape of the Ponteggio vineyards.

The route is a peaceful, easy walk suitable for everyone; as a host de The Court of Marga, I often recommend this ring to those looking for an experience that isn't too strenuous but has great cultural and emotional depth, perhaps to be combined with one of the many wineries in the area.

🚶 THE ITINERARY: Points of Interest Along the Route

Although the itinerary is easy, it presents some specific junctions to follow to complete the loop, which I have summarised below:

START (P): Parking at Via Buse di San Pellegrino (Bigolino). Pass the shrine and at Bivio 1 Keep to the right to go up towards the heart of the hills.

TOWARDS THE SCAFFOLDING Overcome the Bivio 2 and crosses the main roadVia Europa / SP 28Enter the rural village of Score.

THE VILLAGE (Junctions 3 and 4): Here you will find the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Giuliana Tower. Cross the settlement and at Bivio 4 Turn left west.

THE FORK (Junction 5): Reach the location The Fork. Here the view opens onto the Piave. Continue along the ridge.

THE TRENCHES (Junction 6) Enter the area of Montagnola. Here you will walk above the recovered Austro-Hungarian trenches and positions (Museum of Memory). Stop at the circular structure to identify the surrounding hills.

DESCENT (Junction 7): Come down off the historic mound and pass by the Country House “La Montagnola”. Al Bivio Junction Turn right south, immersing yourself in the vineyards.

THE SECRET LANE (Junction 8): Warning! After 200m of dirt track, at the wooden barrier, turn Left and physically enters the Prosecco rows.

THE POND (Junction 9): Leave the vineyard, passing through another barrier, go past the Pond and to the hut, closing the loop and returning to the initial car park.

“Look at the map: there are many forks in the road, but by following landmarks like La Forca and the Laghetto, the Anello della Montagnola becomes a dance between history and nature. It's the route I prefer to explain to my guests what the resilience of our land is.”
