The Prosecco Hills are not just vineyards and orderly rows of vines: they are also one of the areas with the highest concentration of castles, fortresses and historic villas in the whole of Veneto. From Miane, in less than an hour's drive you can reach manors that tell a thousand years of history — from the fortified settlements of the Serenissima to nineteenth-century neo-Gothic residences. Here is the complete guide to the eight castles and historic villas that La Corte di Marga recommends to its guests, organised by area.
Just a few minutes from Conegliano, the hill of Susegana guards the heart of the history of the Collalto family, one of the most powerful dynasties in the Marca Trevigiana. Here stand the ruins of the Castle of San Salvatore, the manor that withstood (and partially yielded to) the bombardment of the Great War, with a view stretching from the vine-clad hills all the way to the plains.
Moving northwards, the village of Serravalle in Vittorio Veneto still preserves the layout of its ancient Castle and castrum, squeezed between the rocks and the medieval walls that defended the access to the Prealps. Further northwest, among the Belluno Prealps, the Zumelle Castle Instead, it is the manor of legends: a stronghold which, according to popular tradition, has never been taken by force.
In the heart of the city of Conegliano, on the Giano hill, the Conegliano Castle — of medieval origins, now home to the Civic Museum — offers one of the most photographed views in the entire UNESCO Prosecco Hills: from here, the historic centre, the vineyards and the Prealps can all be seen in a single frame.
In Cison di Valmarino, one of Italy's “Most Beautiful Villages” just a few minutes from La Corte di Marga, Castelbrando It is probably the most scenic of the eight: a Roman castrum transformed over the centuries into the residence of the Brandolini family and now restored as a resort and wellness centre, which can also be reached via a panoramic funicular railway.
Not only fortresses: the Marca Trevigiana is also a land of Venetian villas and stately palaces. The Papadopoli Giol Castle in San Polo di Piave there is a Neo-Gothic dream set within a centuries-old park, which grew around the history of the Papadopoli family and later the Giols, who were among the pioneers of Venetian winemaking. In Vittorio Veneto, Palazzo Minucci-De Carlo it holds a surprising history, between papal secret agents and Great War spies. Lastly, Villa Sandi it combines the architecture of a historic Venetian villa with the local winemaking tradition, featuring its historic underground cellars.
With eight stops, it's best not to think of a single tour: La Corte di Marga suggests grouping visits by area, perhaps alternating a castle in the morning with a tasting experience in the afternoon (see our food and wine experiences). The nearest cluster — Castelbrando and the surrounding area of Cison di Valmarino — can be reached in a few minutes by car from La Corte di Marga and is the most convenient starting point for those staying with us.
How many castles can you visit starting from Miane?
In the area of the Prosecco Hills and the Marca Trevigiana, within an hour's drive of Miane, you can visit at least eight castles, fortresses and historic villas: Castelbrando, the Castle of Conegliano, the Castle of San Salvatore in Susegana, the Castle and Castrum of Serravalle, the Castle of Zumelle, the Castello Papadopoli Giol, Palazzo Minucci-De Carlo and Villa Sandi.
What is the nearest castle to La Corte di Marga?
Castelbrando, in Cison di Valmarino, is the closest: the hamlet is just a few minutes' drive from Miane and is the most convenient stop for a first outing among the castles of the area.
Can you visit more than one castle in a single day?
It depends on the group: the castles closest to each other (for example Susegana and Conegliano, or Serravalle and Vittorio Veneto) can easily be combined on the same day; to reach Zumelle or San Polo di Piave as well, it is best to dedicate a separate day, given the greater distance.
Is it better to book in advance?
For castles run as civic museums (Conegliano, Serravalle) or as resorts (Castelbrando), we recommend checking opening times and availability directly on official channels before setting off, especially during high-season weekends.
After a day among towers and legends, the best way to enjoy the evening is to return to the hills: discover the accommodation and experiences at La Corte di Marga o book directly your stay among the UNESCO vineyards, just minutes from all the castles in this guide.
