The hill that drinks the rain: the ballet of karst<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing that surprises you when you venture into the woods of Montello is a great, mysterious silence of water. You won't find rivers on the hill, nor will you hear the gurgling of a surface stream. Montello is composed of calcareous conglomerates and behaves like a gigantic sponge. Rainwater, in a millennial dance of chemical dissolution, does not flow on the surface but plunges almost instantly into the bowels of the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This invisible work has created a unique surface landscape in the world, characterised by over 2,000 lira<\/strong>. Imagine massive natural funnels, basins of deep green earth that dot the entire hill. Walking on Montello means moving across these continuous undulations, where the microclimate changes with every step. At the bottom of the dolines the air is cool, humid, almost ancestral, and the vegetation becomes so dense that it blots out the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneath the hikers' feet, then, a parallel world branches out: beyond ninety caves catalogued<\/strong> the underground canyons carved by the perennial flow of invisible water, which make this hill a treasure chest of pure geology, suspended between the light of the clearings and the darkness of the deep rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Doge's Wood and the Secret of the \u201cPrese\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If Montello has such a particular appearance today, it is thanks to an ancient and indissoluble bond with the Republic of Venice. For nearly four centuries, the Serenissima considered this hill to be its open-air arsenal. From these dense and wild woods came the extremely precious oak timber, the only wood strong and resistant enough to be driven into the mud of the lagoon as foundations for Venetian palaces. The same wood was also used to curve the sides of the war galleys that dominated the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venetian laws were ruthless: the Montello was a \u201cProhibited Forest\u201d. Local inhabitants couldn't touch a single branch, and anyone caught illegally felling wood risked extremely severe punishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the true transformation of the road on the hill took place at the end of the 19th century. When ownership of the forest was divided and privatised, the territory was surgically cut by 21 lesser parallel roads<\/strong>. These roads climb up from the south and then descend northwards towards the Piave, intersecting the only major longitudinal route (the Ridge).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These streets are still called \u201cShots\u201d<\/strong>. The name evokes precisely the land that was \u201ctaken\u201d and assigned to the settlers. It also indicated the corridors used by lumberjacks to venture into the heart of the forest and haul away the logs. Today, walking along the Prese \u2013 marked with consecutive Roman numerals from I to XXI \u2013 means moving along the historical meridians of a forest that built Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many are old trenches, military walkways and shell craters that the earth has reabsorbed, covering them in ivy and dry leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
