Cansiglio with Children: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Cansiglio is suitable even for very young children: the plateau is almost entirely flat, at an altitude of about 1000 metres (cool even in the height of summer), and several sections are accessible with a pushchair. If you are looking for a day trip out of town from The Court of Marga, less than 40 minutes' drive from Miane, here you will find the answers to the practical questions we are most frequently asked — what to expect, where to stop with little ones and what to bring. For the complete step-by-step itinerary, our go-to account remains The Cansiglio Ring with children: this article completes it with the most searched practical questions.

Is the Cansiglio suitable for a 6-year-old child (or even younger)?

Yes. The plateau has no challenging changes in elevation and the main routes (the Cimbri Path, the section towards the Doges' Wood) run on flat terrain, partly on wide unpaved roads and partly on shaded paths in the wood. For a 6-year-old child, it is an ideal environment for walking independently, with frequent stops between points of interest. For younger children (0-4 years), the initial part of the Cimbri Path, on a tarmac/compacted unpaved surface, is also accessible with a pushchair.

Is the route suitable for a pushchair?

Partly yes. The initial section of the Cimbrian Path is well signposted and allows you to choose between a wider, firmer road (suitable for a pushchair) and a narrower, shadier woodland path (more suitable for those walking). If you have an all-terrain pushchair or a baby carrier/backpack for the more naturalistic stretches, you can still easily complete the entire loop.

How long does the trip take with children?

Counting the stops, an entire morning or afternoon is the right length. From La Corte di Marga the drive takes about 35-40 minutes, so it is easy to organise as a half-day trip, perhaps combining it with a packed lunch or a stop at one of the plateau's mountain huts.

Are there play areas or picnic spaces?

Yes. In addition to the points of interest already covered in our article on the Cansiglio Ring (Bosco dei Dogi, Bar Bianco, Visitor Centre and Museum of Man), the plateau offers two areas designed specifically for families:

  • Sant’Anna districta small riding school, a play area and a picnic space, with a nearby inn for a hot meal.
  • Near the Sant’Osvaldo Refugea picnic area and a playground with views of the surrounding mountains, also close to the “G. Lorenzoni” Alpine Botanical Garden.

What can children see in the woods?

The Cansiglio is one of the largest and best-preserved forests in the Veneto (beech and fir trees), a protected area where hunting has long been banned: it is common to spot red deer, roe deer and fallow deer, as well as foxes, hares and other small wildlife. The Visitor Centre and Museum of Man, in the Cansiglio Plain, is an excellent stop before the walk to explain to children what they will encounter in the woods and to learn about the history of the Cimbrians, the community of German-origin lumberjacks who have inhabited the plateau since the 1700s.

What to bring for the trip?

Comfortable shoes, a sweatshirt or light jacket even in summer (the altitude and shade of the wood significantly lower the temperature), water, and if possible a pair of binoculars for the more curious.

And if it rains?

The Visitors' Centre and Museum of Man and the Cimbrian Village of Vallorch remain worthwhile even in bad weather; for a completely indoor alternative in the same area, the Caglieron Caves I'm another family-friendly stop that we're featuring on the blog.
