Val Trippera: Trekking in the Primordial Breath of the Pre-Alps (Path 19)

This itinerary is a “total” experience that fuses the sacred art of the millennia-old Pieve of Saint Peter of Feletto (XII cent.) with the raw and primordial nature of Val Trippera. The route, identified as CAI Path 19 (o 019) takes us to discover the “breath” of a valley carved by the stream, among groves of hornbeam, chestnut trees, and the famous vineyards of Prosecco Superiore DOCG.

It is a route that amazes with its variety and the views it offers, and is ideal for those who want to combine the contemplation of the masterpieces of Feletto with the regenerating and mysterious coolness of the valley floor, once vibrant with agricultural and artisanal life.

I've ideally divided this itinerary into 3 phases to highlight the key points you'll find along the way:

Phase 1: From the Parish Church to the Vineyards

  1. DEPARTURE: The starting point is the car park adjacent to the’Old Parish Church of St. Peter of Feletto. Before leaving, it is essential to admire the external frescoes (12th century).
  2. THE ATTACK: From the car park, take Via Roncalli, following the clear instructions for the Path 19. The road descends sharply, changing from secondary asphalt to concrete, running alongside the Prosecco Superiore vineyards. Critical juncture Hold on Left following the CAI markers (019).
  3. THE SPRING CROSSROADS (CANNELLE): After about ten minutes of descending between the rows and a few farmhouses, the path leaves the concrete and heads left into the woods. Millimetric junction A sign indicates a spring to the right, while Trail 19 Turn sharply left Entering the deep woods. Do not proceed straight on.

STAGE 2: In the Womb of the Valley (Valley Floor – Gorge)

  1. LA FORRA Here the path becomes narrow and damp, skirting the Rio della Val Trippera. You are surrounded by hornbeam and chestnut trees. Keep an eye out in spring for the blooms of Wood Anemone e Hellebore (Black hellebore).
  2. THE FORD Follow the CAI markings on the trees. You will have to pass Ford on the stones. Critical juncture Follow the marker diligently on the RIGHT what leads you to go around a denser area of vegetation.
  3. THE RUINS OF THE MILLS: In a clearing surrounded by large boulders, the path leads you to encounter the evocative ruins of two ancient mills. These remains bear witness to the economic importance of the valley in past centuries.
  4. The wooden bridge: Cross the stream by way of a sturdy Wooden bridge.

PHASE 3: Smuggling and Ascent Stories (Crest and Return)

  1. LA GROTTA DELLA SGNAPA: Immediately after the bridge, on the left, you will find an information panel and the famous Grotta della Sgnapa Grappa (in dialect), or Cave of the Illicit Distillers. Here, grappa was once illicitly distilled in the valley's silence. A dive into local folklore.
  2. THE ASCENT (Ridge): The path begins to climb steeply again towards the eastern ridge of the valley, alternating wooded sections with scenic passages through olive groves. Millimetric junction At the big rock uphill, turn RIGHT.
  3. The scenic return: Once you reach the dirt track on the ridge, the path offers incredible views of the Refrontolo vineyards and, on clear days, all the way to the plain. Millimetric junction Go past Borgata Castagnè and gradually return towards the Pieve, closing the loop.

🍷 AUTHOR'S WINES

After treading the soil of Val Trippera, there is no better way to honour the Feletto than by stopping at a place that has made history for local communications (and cuisine):

  1. The Cellar Sommariva (Click here for the map). A mandatory stop to savour a Col Fondo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, unfiltered and organic, reflecting the minerality of the calcareous lands of Feletto.
  2. Trattoria La Postina: Via Castagnè, 2, 31020 San Pietro di Feletto (TV).The Story This establishment is not just a trattoria; it's an institution. The name comes from the historic owner who, for decades, served as the village postwoman. The trattoria was the place where mail was sorted: news, stories, and the struggles of the people of Feletto arrived here. Today, that atmosphere of authentic welcome lives on in the dishes: don't miss the spit-roasted meat and the homemade pasta, served with the same care that was once given to delivering the most anticipated letters.
