If Conegliano Castle represents the cradle of winemaking knowledge with its historic school, there is a place, just a few kilometres away, that embodies the true nobility of Treviso wine. I am speaking of Cantine Conte Collalto, the historic winery in Susegana featured in this guide.
We are in Susegana, about a 22-minute drive from The Court of Marga, at the foot of the majestic Castle of San Salvatore. This is where they arise Conte Collalto Winery, a farm whose history has been intertwined with that of the aristocratic family of the same name since 958 AD.
Visiting this estate (led today with extraordinary elegance by Princess Isabella Collalto de Croÿ) doesn't simply mean doing a “tasting”. It means making a pilgrimage to one of the oldest, largest and most fascinating wineries in the whole of the Veneto.
The true magic of the visit begins when you go below ground level. The historical cellar, partially destroyed during the Great War and rebuilt with tenacity, is a maze of majestic tunnels.
Strolling in the Historical Cask It is an almost mystical experience: you will be surrounded by imposing Slavonian oak barrels, where the estate's great red wines rest in absolute silence, at a temperature and humidity naturally controlled by the thick masonry. It is a sharp and fascinating contrast with the modern steel autoclaves used for making their renowned Prosecco Superiore DOCG.
The Susegana Hills offer a unique terroir: here, calcareous clay makes it possible to cultivate not only Glera (the Prosecco grape), but also grape varieties capable of creating structured and complex wines. During the tasting tour you will have the opportunity to sample masterpieces such as Incrocio Manzoni Bianco, great Bordeaux blends and, above all, the absolute uniqueness of this winery: the rare and rebellious Wildbacher, an Austrian red wine that has found in these hills its second (and only) Italian home.

The wine shop and retail outlet are freely open to the public for purchases. However, to access the underground cellar and take part in guided tasting tours with the estate's sommeliers, booking is compulsory.
Absolutely yes. The wineries are located right at the foot of the Castle hill. We often recommend our guests to book the tasting in the morning and then admire the majestic silhouette of the fortress from below, perhaps strolling along the paths that surround the estate's vineyards.
In addition to the excellent Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, we warmly advise you to taste their still wines: the Manzoni Bianco (a grape variety born right in these areas) and the legendary Wildbacher, an intense and rare red of which the winery holds almost a monopoly in Italy.
